About the destination
Lignano Sabbiadoro occupies a sandy peninsula where the Tagliamento river meets the Adriatic, with the Marano lagoon and its fishing casoni behind. Ernest Hemingway called it the Italian Florida, and the resort has kept that mid-century holiday feeling: a long beach graded gently into shallow water, a pine wood laid out in the 1950s at Lignano Pineta, thermal baths, a marina and a terramare of family attractions. Aquileia and its Roman basilica are half an hour east, and Venice ninety minutes west.

The season runs May to September, with July and August at capacity — largely Austrian and German families, whose changeover day is Saturday. Outside the season most hotels close and the resort is quiet; transfers run all year.
