Trieste
About the destination
Trieste was for five centuries the port of the Habsburgs, and it still looks it: Piazza Unità d'Italia opens onto the sea between neoclassical palaces, the Viennese cafés serve coffee under a vocabulary of their own, and James Joyce, Italo Svevo and Umberto Saba all wrote here. Above the city the Karst plateau begins, limestone and bora wind, with Miramare castle white on its promontory below. It is the least Italian-looking Italian city, and the closest to Slovenia — the border is fifteen minutes away.
About the route
Road, traffic and timing
The route follows the A4 east across the Veneto and Friuli plain, past Portogruaro, Latisana and Palmanova, then descends the Karst escarpment on the A4/RA13 into Trieste: 149 km, about 1h45, tolls included.
Travel tips
Know before you go
- Ask for the coastal descent via Sistiana if you have time — the gulf view is worth the ten minutes
- The bora blows hardest between November and March: journeys are slower, never unsafe
- For a cruise departure, send the ship name: the pier is on your cruise documents

When to visit
Seasonal notes & events
Trieste works all year. Summer brings the sea and the Barcolana regatta in October fills every hotel in the city — the second week of October is the one to book earliest. Winter is the season of the bora, spectacular and cold, and of the cafés for which the city is famous.
