Venezia (Piazzale Roma)
About the destination
Venice is built on 118 islands laced by 150 canals and joined by more than 400 bridges, and no car has ever driven into it. The city's road network ends at Piazzale Roma, beside the Grand Canal, where the Ponte della Costituzione crosses toward Santa Lucia railway station. From that square every district is reachable: San Marco and its basilica of golden mosaics, the Rialto with its market and bridge, Dorsoduro and the Accademia galleries, the quiet Cannaregio lanes where Venetians actually live. Knowing that the car stops at Piazzale Roma is not a limitation to work around — it is simply how the most extraordinary city in Europe is built.
About the route
Road, traffic and timing
Marco Polo Airport sits at Tessera, on the lagoon shore 15 km north of the historic centre. The transfer follows the SR11 through Mestre and crosses the 3.85 km Ponte della Libertà, the road and rail causeway built over the lagoon, ending at Piazzale Roma. Drive time is 20 minutes in normal conditions. There are no tolls on this route; fuel and airport parking are included in the fixed price.

Know before you go

- Venice's bridges have steps — if you travel with heavy suitcases, a water taxi from Piazzale Roma to your hotel is worth the extra
- The 'people mover' monorail links Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto and the cruise terminal in 3 minutes

When to visit
Seasonal notes & events
Best months: April–June and September–October. Carnival (February) and the Biennale openings fill the city and the causeway; book transfers well ahead. In November and December high water (acqua alta) can flood low-lying areas for a few hours around high tide — it never affects the road to Piazzale Roma, only your walk afterwards, so pack waterproof shoes.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How much does a private transfer from Venice airport to the city centre cost?+
Fixed prices start at €75 for up to 3 passengers to Piazzale Roma. A Mercedes E-Class is €85, a Mercedes V-Class for up to 6 passengers €100. Prices are per vehicle, not per person, and include luggage, meet & greet, tolls and flight monitoring.
Can the car take me to my hotel in the historic centre?+
No car can — Venice has no roads. Every vehicle, taxi or private, stops at Piazzale Roma. From there you reach your hotel by vaporetto (public waterbus), by private water taxi, or on foot. Tell us your hotel when you book and we will tell you which of the three is quickest for you.
How long is the drive from Marco Polo airport to Piazzale Roma?+
About 20 minutes for 15 km, via the SR11 and the Ponte della Libertà causeway. Allow 10 extra minutes on summer weekend afternoons and during Carnival, when traffic on the causeway builds up.
Is a private transfer better than the Alilaguna waterbus?+
They are different products. Alilaguna is a shared waterbus: cheaper per person, roughly 70–90 minutes to San Marco with stops. A private car reaches Piazzale Roma in 20 minutes, waits for your flight, carries your luggage and costs one fixed price for the whole vehicle — usually the better deal from three passengers up, and always the better one with heavy bags or small children.
Will my driver wait if my flight is delayed?+
Yes. We monitor the flight in real time and the driver adjusts the pick-up automatically, waiting up to 60 minutes after actual landing at no extra cost.
What if I am staying in Mestre and not on the islands?+
Then the car takes you to your hotel door: Mestre is on the mainland and fully drivable. That transfer is 12 km, about 18 minutes, from €65 — see our Marco Polo to Mestre page.
