Grado
About the destination
Grado sits on an island between the Adriatic and its own lagoon, reached by a causeway that runs for kilometres over shallow water and fishing casoni. The old town is a tight grid of Venetian-Istrian lanes around a sixth-century basilica with its original mosaic floor; the beach faces south, which is rare on this coast and gives it sun all day. The Austrians made it a bathing resort for Vienna in the nineteenth century, and the thermal spa still works the lagoon sand and water. Aquileia, with its Roman ruins and UNESCO basilica, is ten minutes inland.
