Aquileia
About the destination
Aquileia was founded in 181 BC and grew into one of the largest cities of the Roman empire, a river port and the seat of a patriarchate that outlasted Rome itself. What survives is extraordinary: the fourth-century basilica holds a mosaic floor of 760 square metres, the largest early-Christian mosaic in the West, discovered under a later pavement in 1909. Around it lie the forum, the river port and the excavated streets, and the whole complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — visited by a fraction of the crowds that fill comparable sites elsewhere.
About the route
Road, traffic and timing
From Ronchi dei Legionari the route runs west on the SS14 and the SR352 to Aquileia: 12 km, about eighteen minutes, no tolls.
Travel tips
Know before you go
- The mosaic floor is walked on a raised glass path — allow a full hour inside the basilica
- The bell tower climb gives the best view over the excavated city
- Combine with Grado for a half-day: mosaics in the morning, lagoon in the afternoon

When to visit
Seasonal notes & events
Aquileia is a year-round site and pleasantly empty outside the summer. In July and August combine it with an early start: the excavations offer little shade.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How much is a transfer from Trieste airport to Aquileia?+
From €55 for up to 3 passengers, €75 for a Mercedes V-Class up to 6. Fixed price per vehicle.
How far is Aquileia from the airport?+
12 km, about eighteen minutes by car.
Can we combine Aquileia and Grado?+
Yes — they are ten minutes apart. Tell us at booking and we plan the route, or book the driver by the hour for the day.
Is there public transport from the airport?+
There are buses, but infrequent and with a change; for a site visit with a return flight to catch, a booked car is the safer arrangement.
