Trieste Centrale is the city's terminus station, opened under the Habsburg empire and facing the sea a few minutes from Piazza Unità d'Italia. It is served by Frecciarossa trains to Venice, Milan and Rome and by Friuli Venezia Giulia regional services, including those calling at the station inside Ronchi dei Legionari airport. The centre is compact and walkable, but the destinations that make Trieste worth the trip — the Karst, Miramare, Portopiccolo, the osmize, the Collio, the Slovenian border — are poorly served by public transport, and that is where a car with a driver changes the day. The airport is 40 minutes away, the cruise terminal eight.

Your driver waits in the station forecourt, in front of the main exit, with a board showing your surname. For excursions on the Karst or in the Collio the hourly service is the better arrangement: the distances are short but the stops are many, and a point-to-point fare would cost more.
