The Habsburg port
Piazza Unità on the sea, Viennese cafés and the Karst.
Trieste was the Habsburg port for five centuries and still carries the mark: Piazza Unità d'Italia is the largest sea-facing square in Europe, the historic cafés are Viennese in their service and their vocabulary, and Joyce, Svevo and Saba all wrote in these streets. Above the city the Karst begins, with its osmize and the Grotta Gigante; on the gulf stands the white castle of Miramare.
