Padua lies 47 km from Venice and stands comparison on its own: the Scrovegni Chapel with Giotto's 1305 fresco cycle, the basilica of St Anthony, a university teaching since 1222 and the oldest botanical garden in the world, from 1545. In 2021 UNESCO inscribed its eight fourteenth-century fresco complexes as "Padova Urbs Picta". It is the day trip most visitors to Venice never plan, and they are wrong not to.
