Eleven kilometres of sand and the September film festival.
The Lido is the eleven-kilometre island that separates the lagoon from the Adriatic, and the only part of Venice where cars are allowed. It became one of Europe's first bathing resorts in the nineteenth century and has hosted the Venice Film Festival every September for over ninety years. Liberty villas, tree-lined avenues and a beach as long as the island: another Venice, far less crowded.

Practical tips
- Reach it by waterbus from St Mark's in 15 minutes; the car ferry leaves from Tronchetto.
- In September, during the festival, hotels and transfers must be booked well ahead.
