The Grand Canal runs almost four kilometres through Venice in a reversed S, and it is the city's main street: more than a hundred and seventy palaces built between the 13th and 18th centuries face onto it. Four bridges cross it — Rialto, Accademia, Scalzi and Costituzione — which explains why, the moment you step out of the car at Piazzale Roma, the logic of the journey changes: from there on you think in water.

- Line 1 stops everywhere and takes 45 minutes; line 2 is faster and skips many stops.
- With heavy luggage, continue from the Piazzale Roma transfer by water taxi.
