Aquileia

The largest mosaic in the West

760 square metres of early-Christian floor.

Aquileia was founded in 181 BC and became one of the largest cities of the Roman empire, a river port and a patriarchal seat. From the fourth-century basilica survives a mosaic floor of 760 square metres, the largest early-Christian mosaic in the West, uncovered in 1909 beneath a later pavement. The complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and receives a fraction of the visitors of comparable sites.

  • Climbing the bell tower gives the clearest reading of the excavated city.
  • In summer visit early: the excavations have no shade.
